INBio's herbarium was established in 1993; however, INBio has been generating information and specimens of flora of Costa Rica since 1989, through mainly join projects/activities with the National Herbarium of Costa Rica and the Missouri Botanical Garden due to the Manual of Plants of Costa Rica project.
The herbarium host a reference collection of about 230,000 specimens, representing around 9,000 species (ca. 85-90% of the expected Costa Rican flora), and the collection is fully data based and all records are available on the Web ( http://www.inbio.ac.cr ); the collection is a result of botanical visit/exploration of more than 15,000 localities around country and almost two sets of duplicates are located at the National Herbarium(CR) and Missouri Botanical Garden(MO) as cross taxonomic reference collections.
