The IEB herbarium was founded in 1985 by Jerzy Rzedowski, in order to guard and preserve the specimens collected during the development of the Flora del Bajio y de Regiones Adyacentes project.
Actually the herbarium has a collection of 215,000 specimens of vascular plants, mainly from the central and western part of Mexico. It holds important collections of Elizabeth Argüelles, Eleazar Carranza, Raquel Galván, Charles Glass, George Hinton, Emmanuel Pérez, Hiram Rubio, Victor W. Steinmann, Jerzy Rzedowski, Emma Ventura y Eutíquio López, Sergio Zamudio, and other Mexican collectors.
The whole collection has been captured in a data base program and is available in the Red Mundial de Biodiversidad (REMIB), managed by the Comisión Nacional para el Conocimiento y Uso de la Biodiversidad (CONABIO).
Now this herbarium is considered the fourth in importance in Mexico. 11- a list of materials that might be of special interest to people who are reading this description from the JSTOR plants site.
Geographically the IEB herbarium has the most important collections of vascular plants (Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms) from Guanajuato, Michoacán, and Querétaro states. The rest of the collection comes from other states, mainly from Coahuila, Nuevo León, Durango, Jalisco, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Veracruz, Estado de México, Distrito Federal, Puebla and Oaxaca.
With respect to the floristic groups, in addition to the Compositae, Leguminosae and Gramineae; there are important collections of Burseraceae, Convolvulaceae, Crassulaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Lentibulariaceae and Orchidaceae families.
The collection includes 470 types among holotypes and isotypes and a not determined number of paratypes.
