The herbarium GZU is a University collection, was founded in the 19th century and consists of several parts:

The collection of vascular plants (ferns, clubmosses, flowering plants, conifers and other gymnosperms).
Important collections: ECKLON, HOPPE, NEES AB ESENBECK (families Acanthaceae, Bombacaceae, Lauraceae, Piperaceae, Solanaceae, Sterculiaceae with more than 1500 type specimens), RECHINGER (doubles from herbarium W: Persien, Afghanistan incl. several type specimens); ROSTHORN (China); SENNEN (Spain and N-Africa incl. type specimens); WIGHT; WALLICH; ZEYHER (S-Africa);
- The lichen collection: (the most recent fast growing collection) mainly material from the Alps, but large collections also from Mediterranean and northern Europe as well as from the Americas and Asia (Himalayan and Tibetian region – coll. of POELT, MIEHE, OBERMAYER, DICKORÉ)
- The collection of fungi wich beside the “ Reliquiae Petrakiana e” includes the included the exsiccata of E. Bartholomew : North American Uredinales; J. Eriksson : Fungi parasitici Scandinavici exsiccate; J. T. Vestergren : Micromycetes rariores selecti praecipue Scandinavici; L. Romell : Fungi exsiccati praesertim Scandinavici and a large collection of ascomycetes
