The Herbarium Senckenbergianum Görlitz (GLM), founded in 1823 by the Naturforschende Gesellschaft zu Görlitz, houses more than 350,000 specimens. About half of these are vascular plants and nearly one third are fungi. In addition, the collection contains approximately 35,000 lichens, 26,000 mosses, and 2,500 algae. The Herbarium holds an estimated 1,000-1,200 type specimens.
Geographically, the collection is focused on south-eastern Germany and adjacent territories of Poland and Czech Republic (Herbarium Lusaticum), and Central Europe, but other regions of the globe are represented, too. These include for instance South Africa and the Caucasus region, from where we have relevant moss and lichen samples.
The greatest part of the collection is registered in digital databases and searchable online via the Senckenberg collection database SESAM, and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
