Centro Studi Erbario Tropicale Università degli Studi di Firenze

The Tropical Herbarium Studies Centre is part of the University of Florence and is a scientific institution devoted to the development of botanical research in the tropical regions. The Herbarium was established in Rome in 1904 and transferred to Florence in 1918. It contains the most important historical collections of specimens from East Africa made between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. This collection also includes approximately 4000 type specimens of plants. Since its transfer to Florence, the acquisition of specimens from other regions of Africa, Central and South America, and Australia has augmented the core collection of plants from East Africa. At present, 89.7 percent of specimens are from Africa (especially East and Northeast Africa), 5.1 percent from America, 4.3 percent from Asia, 0.8 percent from Oceania, and the remaining specimens are cultivated.
Professor Mauro Raffaelli is President of the Herbarium, Marcello Tardelli is Curator, and Laura Settesoldi is Collaborator. The Tropical Herbarium of Florence is open from Monday to Saturday (from 8:00 to 14:00). Access may also be obtained by making an advance appointment.
