The Herbarium Senckenbergianum Frankfurt/M. (FR) of the Senckenbergische Gesellschaft für Naturforschende Frankfurt/M., founded in 1817, houses more than 1 million plant specimens. Three-quarters of these are phanerogams. The cryptogam collection contains approximately 55 000 ferns, 52 000 lichens, 45 000 mosses, and 7000 algae. Geographically, the collection is focussed on Hesse and Central Europe, but other regions of the globe are well represented, too. These include Ethiopia, Mexico, Cuba, Nicaragua, Japan, Europe, the Mediterranean, the Mid-Atlantic Islands, and the West African Savannah regions (especially Burkina Faso, Bénin, and Nigeria). The West African herbarium is kept separate and fully searchable online in the SESAM database. This virtual herbarium database is constantly expanding. The Herbariam holds an estimated 2500–3500 types specimens, of which the collections of E. Rüppell and the historical material from Southern Africa (e.g., Thunberg, Ecklon, and Zeyher; Dregè; Krauss) and many other areas are of special interest within the Global Plants Initiative context.
Since 2009 the Herbarium Senckenbergianum comprises also botanical collections in Görlitz (GLM), Weimar (IQW) and Wilhelmshaven.
