The Flora of North America Association is a consortium, managed by a 35-member Board of Directors, that coordinates the work of more than 900 botanists to produce a comprehensive Flora of North America in print and electronic form. The work covers vascular plants and bryophytes native or naturalized in North America north of Mexico, including continental U.S., Canada, Greenland, and St. Pierre et Miquelon. Taxonomic entries include current taxonomic/phylogenetic relationships, correct nomenclature and bibliographic citations, basionyms and citations, major synonymy, detailed descriptions, distributions within North America and elsewhere, habitat, and conservation status, and discussion of issues. A small map shows distribution of every species and infraspecific taxon; every genus and 1/3—1/6 of the species are illustrated. Eighteen of the total series of 30 volumes have been published by Oxford University Press-US and are also available online. The project is scheduled for completion in 2017.

Flora of North America treatments are prepared and edited by botanists who volunteer their time. Treatments are based on study of herbarium specimens, published literature, and field and laboratory studies.

Eighteen of the total 30 volumes have been published, containing accounts of 234 families, 2,021 genera, and 12,393 species. These volumes also contain original illustrations of 5,000 species, subspecies, or varieties, plus illustrations of most of the 1,370+ species of grasses.

Materials of Special Interest (On the Flora of North America website):

  • The Published Volumes pages include all text, illustrations, and maps for volumes 1—5, 7--9, 19—28. Volume 1 contains background information about the phytogeography of plants of North America and the history of their study. Volumes 19, 20, 21 contain the entire Asteraceae; Volumes 24 and 25 contain Poaceae, and Volumes 27 and 28 are two of three volumes on Bryophytes.
  • The Future Volumes pages contain lists of genera being treated in each of the remaining volumes along with names and contact information for the botanist writing each treatment.
  • • Resources for Authors and Editors includes the Guide for Contributors and the Flora of North America Glossary.
