The Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) has a mandate to conduct research into all aspects of forestry, forest products utilization, wildlife, watershed management, agro-forestry, and the like. FRIN's Taxonomy Section developed the nationally renowned Forest Herbarium Ibadan (FHI), the largest herbarium in Nigeria with more than 100 000 collections. This extensive range of taxa and numerous examples of each taxon, representative of Nigerian vegetation types and all under one roof, has made FHI indispensable in taxonomic research of Nigerian flora. Indeed, FHI's collections are the result of pioneering and exploratory work in Nigerian taxonomy and provide a foundation for further study and research. FHI is particularly proud of its Flora of Nigeria Collection. Among FHI's activities are taxonomic research, assistance with plant identification and collection, training para-taxonomists, ethno-botanical study, biodiversity conservation, and ecological surveying. The FHI also serves as a centre for monograph writing and plays an important national role by exchanging information and botanical specimens with other herbaria both within and outside the country.
