The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) is the custodian of Kenya’s natural and cultural heritage and has several museums, sites, and monuments throughout Kenya that are open to the public. NMK is a multidisciplinary institution with more than 18 research departments, along with various programs and associated institutes. NMK owns many research collections, which are mostly housed in Nairobi and Mombasa. The East African Herbarium (EA), a department of NMK founded in 1902, has approximately 1 million specimens, comprising mostly vascular plants with a few bryological and mycological collections. Nairobi Botanic Garden is a complementary part of EA. EA’s mission is: ‘To collect, preserve, research and disseminate botanical information on Kenya and the East African region for conservation and utilization’.
