The National Botanic Garden of Belgium is one of the world’s foremost botanical institutes. Its herbarium contains at least 3 million specimens. The institute has a living collection of 18,000 species in cultivation and a comprehensive library of some 200,000 volumes. Among the institute’s primary goals are the increase and dissemination of knowledge about plants, as well as the conservation of biodiversity.

Materials of Special Interest

  • General Herbarium: Worldwide collection of vascular plants containing more than 1 million specimens, incorporating the 300 000 specimens of the Herbarium Martii
  • Belgian Herbarium: Vascular plants from Belgium and Luxemburg; approximately 250 000 specimens
  • Rosa Herbarium of F. Crépin: Maintained in Crépin’s arrangement; approximately 50,000 specimens
  • Rubus Collection of J. Van Winkel: Containing approximately 50 000 specimens
  • Dendrological Herbarium: Cultivated trees and shrubs, mainly from Belgium
  • Teratological Herbarium: Anomalous structures and galls, mainly from Belgium
  • Vascular Plant Collection: Includes, among others, spirit collection, carpological specimens, and wood
  • Pollen Slide Collection
  • Mycological Herbarium: Containing approximately 150 000 specimens
  • Bryological Herbarium: Containing approximately 300 000 specimens
  • Algological Herbarium
