The herbarium of the Botanical Institute of Barcelona (BC) specializes in flora of the western Mediterranean Region. It also contains plants from Africa (most of them collected by Font Quer in Morocco and from recent campaigns to North Morocco by the Biogeo project), Europe, South America, and the rest of the world.

This herbarium is the most important collection in Catalonia, and the second most important in Spain. It contains about 800 000 herbarium sheets collected from the 17 th century to the present day. It was the basis for the publication of important Flora works: “Flora dels Països Catalans”, “Flora Iberica”, “Checklist of vascular plants of N Morocco”, and “Med-Checklist - A critical inventory of vascular plants of the circum-mediterranean countries”. It contains 1000 type specimens from Africa and 11 000 from the rest of the world.

Materials of special interest:

  • specimens from Morocco collected by Font Quer during four years (1927-1930) as a Head of Pharmacy of the Spanish Army in Africa.
  • specimens from the eastern part of Northern Morocco collected between 1928 and 1935 by Frère Sennen, with his collaborator Fr. Mauricio, belonging both to the “Écoles Chrétiens de la Salle” using as a base the city of Melilla.
  • recently collected specimens from Northern Morocco collected by Alfonso Susanna, Francisco Javier Fernández Casas, Julià Molero, Àngel Romo, Josep M. Montserrat, Ignasi Soriano, and others.
