The CIRAD Herbarium is currently recorded under name ALF in the database Index Herbariorum, New York Botanical Garden (Bronx, New York 10458-5126, the U.S.A.). This collection, started in 1957-58 at the Zootechnical Research Centre (CRZ) of Bamako-Sotuba in Mali, was transferred in 1960 to the Tropical Breeding and Veterinary Medicine Institute of Maisons-Alfort (France). The collection counts approximately 60.000 specimens including 60 types. This herbarium is of great scientific interest because of its specificity, on the level of the African dry tropical zone from Mauritania to Chad (field of the pastoralism). It thus refers in particular to the Soudanian and Sahelian Domains and but was enriched by complementary harvests carried out in Ethiopia, Djibouti, Southern Africa (Zimbabwe), Middle East and Morocco.

Materials of Special Interest: The ALF Herbarium is specific of the African dry tropical area with an excellent representation of the woody and herbaceous flora of the Soudanian and Sahelian ecosystems  The Poaceae and Cyperaceae families are particularly well represented.
