The University of Alaska Herbarium (ALA) contains more than 220,000 specimens of non-vascular and vascular plants and is the only major research herbarium in Alaska. The collection also includes plants from other states, as well as Canada, Greenland, Fennoscandia, Japan, and Russia. The Herbarium consists of three main plant collections and several ancillary collections. Roughly two-thirds of the specimens are vascular plants (gymnosperms, fern and fern allies, flowering plants) and one-quarter are cryptogams (bryophytes and lichens). The remainder are marine algae and a small collection of fleshy fungi.
