Aix-en-Provence’s herbaria are the biggest herbaria in the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur region of France. The 420 000 specimens they contain are very important—scientifically, pedagogically, and historically.
Materials of Special Interest
- The Jahandiez Herbarium: E. Jahandiez, a 20th-century naturalist, wrote a catalogue about phanerogam plants in the Var and, in collaboration with R. Maire, another catalogue about Morocco’s plants. The Jahandiez Herbarium contains types from North Africa and may be an important tool for possible restoration of the flora in that part of the world.
- The Quézel Herbarium: After retiring from his professorship at the University of Aix-Marseille III, Pierre Quézel built an herbarium that includes specimens dating from his journeys to Greece and Turkey in the 1970s. This herbarium also contains specimens from other expeditions to Soudan and Chad, two areas difficult to visit at present, which is one of the reasons, along with the large number of types present, that make this herbarium one of our most interesting collections.
