The Barnes Foundation’s herbarium was started in 1966 by Dr. John Milton Fogg Jr. Fogg served as the director of the arboretum beginning in the same year until retiring in 1979. He endeavored to collect mounted specimens of the plants growing in the arboretum and the Barnes’ country estate KerFeal. As this was a reference collection gathered to benefit students, he also participated in exchanges with other herbaria and gathered specimens from his international travels.
In 2018, the Barnes Foundation launched an educational partnership with Saint Joseph’s University, expanding opportunities for students and the local community. The Barnes retains oversight of the arboretum and the historic buildings, while the operations and grounds are now managed by Saint Joseph’s University.
