plant attaining 5–6 ft. in height, glabrous; blade of leaf 1 1/2–5 ft. long, 2–5 lin. broad, linear or strap-shaped, obtusely pointed, convex on the back and not keeled at its junction with the sheath; male and female spikes subequal, or the female longest, 4 1/2–10 in. long, contiguous or separated by a short interval; stamens mixed with reddish-brown, spathulate scales or bracteoles, that are variously lobed and toothed in the dilated portion; pollen simple; female flowers bracteolate; bracteoles lanceolate-spathulate or fusiform-clavate, acute or acuminate, longer than the hairs and nearly as long as the stigma, brownish; stigma linear, longer than the hairs, mottled with brown; hairs filiform. null
