Notes
VARIATION. van Ooststroom (loc. cit.) maintains some 17 varieties of this species of which two, var. alsinoïdes and var. linifolius (L.) Bak. are recorded from our area. The former has the leaves 1.5–2.5 times as long as broad and the inflorescences shorter than the leaves in most cases (e.g. Bagshawe 318 from Uganda). Var. linifolius has the leaves 2.5 times as long as broad at least and usually much narrower. The inflorescences are usually longer than the leaves. All the specimens cited come under this variety. They merge together so much, however, that I have not considered them worthy of recognition.
