Robust stoloniferous perennial with a swollen stem base and with or without a short rhizome; stolons to 15 cm long and 0.5–1 mm thick, but to 3 mm thick with persistent fibrous sheaths; stems 25–70 cm long and 3–5 mm thick, triangular, with leaves in lower half. Leaves 15–40 cm long and 5–15 mm wide, flat, with scabrid margin and midrib; sheaths rather conspicuous, green to brownish above, dark brown to purple near the stem base. Inflorescence a lax anthela; major peduncles 5–10, 0.5–25 cm long, carrying single spikes or with 1–3 secondary spikes at the base of some of the main spikes; involucral bracts 6–10, leafy, erect or spreading, the largest 15–40 cm long and 6–12 mm wide. Spikes 15–45 x 20–50 mm, with many spreading spikelets; rhachis strongly winged. Spikelets 10–30 x 0.7–1.5 mm, linear-lanceolate, falling off entire when mature. Glumes 3.5–4.5 mm long, ovate-lanceolate, greenish, golden or reddish brown with translucent border and a greenish midrib (which is sometimes slightly excurrent). Style 3-branched.
