Information
Annuals rarely up to 0,15 m high, with branches erect or decumbent, more or less branched and often producing adventitious roots where branches touch ground. Leaves linear, 2—4(-6) x 1-2 mm, obtuse or acute, more or less flat above and convex below, often shorter in lower parts than towards apex, glabrous, fleshy, green to brown or deep red. Inflorescence with terminal flower, rarely up to 3 flowers, in axil of a leaf due to sympodial growth, with 4-mer-ous flowers. Calyx: lobes broadly triangular, 0,2-0,4 mm long, obtuse. Corolla more or less cup-shaped, scarcely fused at base, white or tinged red; lobes ovate to elliptic, 1,2-2 mm long, obtuse, recurved from about the middle. Stamens with purple anthers. Squamae oblong-cuneate, 0,4-0,7 X 0,1-0,3 mm, slightly rounded, gradually constricted downwards, slightly fleshy, yellow to red.
Habitat
Tolken (1977) mentioned three elements which can be discerned within the species. These have now been described as different species by Friedrich (1979), a status accepted here although more research is needed to delimit the taxa clearly.
Use
4. Crassula vaillantii (Willd.) Roth, Enum. PI. Phan. Germ. 1: 992 (1827); Schonl. in Ann. Bolus Herb. 2: 51, fig. 3 & pi. 2, fig. 4 (1917); in Trans. R. Soc. S. Afr. 17: 182 (1929); Tolken in Contr. Bolus Herb. 8: 95 (1977); Friedr. in Mitt. bot. St Samml. 15: 588 (1979). Type: France, sine leg. in Herb. Willdenow 3217 (B, holo.!).
Range
Found in the Cape Province from the south-western Cape to Namaqualand and southern parts of the Karoo as well as adjoining areas, but originally described from south-western Europe; growing in moist places often in mud around standing water. Flowering period: September-January, but flowers can be found throughout the year if conditions are favourable. Map 6.
