Information
Stems ± erect, prostrate or scandent, usually less than 1 m long; usually glabrous or nearly so, rarely hairy (var. barbatus). Leaves ovate, 1.5–7 x 1–5.5 cm, cuneate at the base, rounded to acute at the apex, entire or often sinuate to almost lobed; petiole 0.5–1.5 cm. Flowers in 3–4(–5) whorls, sometimes with flowers of lowermost whorl replaced by shortly pedunculate umbels; peduncle up to 4.5–7 cm, rhachis up to 5 cm; pedicels up to 5(–7) mm long in fruit. Perianth-limb pink, mauve or purple, 2–3 mm long. Stamens 2. Anthocarp clavate with rather attenuate base, 5–6.5 mm long, with subapical whorl of stalked glands and scattered well-defined sessile glands along the ribs.
Range
N1; C1, 2; S1–3 Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia and west to Senegal and Atlantic Islands, south to Tanzania, Botswana and Angola, north to Egypt and Iran, east to India.

25–1350 m.
