Brachystelma discoideum [family ASCLEPIADACEAE]
Information
Perennial herb. Tuber considerably depressed, up to ±70 mm diam. Stems 1-2 (-4), unbranched or sparsely branched above, up to 100 mm tall, puberulous with decurved hairs. Leaves petiolate, broadly ovate to subcircular, 5-15 (-25) x 5-15 (-20) mm, puberulous on lower surface, glabrous above; petiole 2-8 mm long, grooved down upper surface. Flowers 1-2, extra-axillary; pedicels 8-12 (-15) mm long, slightly decurved. Sepals linear-lanceolate, ±2 mm long. Corolla rotate or star-shaped, light yellow, 18-22 mm diam., united at base for 1,5 mm and slightly raised in middle into a small cushion; lobes linear-lanceolate, 8-10 mm long, spreading, with margins recurved, puberulous outside, glabrous within. Corona thick, disc-like around top of staminal column, 5-grooved opposite pollinia; inner lobes represented by cushion-like swellings on inside of disc at base of anthers. Pollinia ±0,25 mm long, with translucent upper margin, attached by very short caudicles to wingless carrier.
Habitat
In March 1968 D. Hardy discovered two tubers of this species near Salt Pan. One of them was figured when it flowered in December 1971. Several further attempts to collect more specimens have been to no avail. The thickened, disc-like corona indicates a relationship with B. schinzii from far distant Ovambo-land, South West Africa.
Use
45. Bracbystelma discoideum R. A. Dyer in Flower. PI. Afr. 42, t.1668 (1973). Type: Transvaal, north of Pretoria at Salt Pan, Hardy 2440 (PRE, holo.!).
Range
Known only from the type locality in the Transvaal, 40 km north of Pretoria near Salt Pan in gravelly, sandy soil.
