Shrub or generally a tree, rarely up to 20 m. tall; bark smooth, light grey. Branchlets greyish brown, with pale lenticels, tips pubescent. Leaf-blades ovate, broad-elliptic or subobovate, apex subcaudate-acuminate, base broadly cuneate, thinly chartaceous, crenate except near the base and acumen, slightly pubescent particularly at the midrib and nerves, glabrescent with age, 4.5–10(–13) cm. long, 2.5–4(–6) cm. broad; lateral nerves 7–8 pairs, rather straightly ascending, raised beneath, venation reticulate, but slightly prominent beneath; petiole bright red, pubescent initially, 0.5–1.4 cm. long. Racemes cylindric, densely flowered, 5–12 cm. long, on a short peduncle, covered with a short greyish pubescence; pedicels slender, 2–3(–4) mm. long. Sepals ovate-deltoid, subacute, pubescent on both faces, 2–3 mm. long, 1.5–2 mm. broad. Glands densely pubescent, truncate, subentire. Filaments slender, glabrous, 3–4 mm. long; anthers 0.2 mm. in diameter. Ovary globose, white tomentulose; styles divergent, glabrous.
