Habitat
So much variation has been recorded for this species that it might seem unnatural to divide it into two subspecies. The difference is not only the presence or absence of stilt roots, but subsp. filicaulis tends to grow near or in False Fynbos while subsp. marlothii is usually found in karroid vegetation. The more slender plants from east of Vanrhynsdorp were not given separate rank although they differ in several respects. The slender long leaves (Tolken 5128) and straight branches distinguish them easily from narrow-leaved forms of A. roaneanus (no. 3).
Use
(a), subsp. filicaulis Tolken in Bothalia 12: 385 (1978).
