Information
shrubby; leaves bifoliolate, shortly petiolate; leaflets obovate, obtuse, sub-oblique at base; calyx glabrous, sepals oval; capsules orbicular, deeply emarginate at each end, 4–5-winged, the wings very wide, membranous, netted. A shrub, 4 feet high. Stem terete, with sub-angular, greyish-green, alternate or opposite branches. Internodes in the primary branches 1–2 1/2 inch long, in the branchlets 1/2–1 inch. Petioles 1/2–1 inch long. Larger leaves 1–1 1/2 inch long, 8–9 lines wide, the rameal mostly one-half inch long or less. Stipules lanceolate, reflexed. Flowers nodding, yellow, 4–5-cleft. Peduncles 6–9 lines long, axillary. Sepals 2 lines long. Petals obovate, thrice as long as the calyx. Staminal scales oblong, lacerate. Capsule very large, mostly 1–1 1/2 inch long and wide, sometimes 2 inches wide, 1 1/2 long, the basal and apical excision nearly one-half inch deep; the wings delicately membranous, with prominent, netted veinlets. Seeds blackish, subpyriform; embryo with little albumen.

SOUTH AFRICA Sandhills, Zwartland, at Saldanha Bay; and at the Zwartkops, Uit., E. & Z.! Winterhoek, and Kampsbay, Krauss! Blauwberg, Bergvalley, Olifant's River and between Kenda and Zwartebergen, Drege! Jul.-Nov. (Herb. Sond., E. Mey., Meisn., Lehm.)
