WENDLANDIA arabica Deflers [family RUBIACEAE], (1896). Fig. 52.
Information
Shrub or tree up to c. 4 m tall, with rough bark; young branchlets puberulous. Leaf-blades narrowly lanceolate to narrowly ovate, c. 7–15 x 1.2–5.5 cm, acuminate at the apex, rigid, pale green beneath, puberulous when young. Flowers fragrant, in many-flowered puberulous panicles. Calyx-lobes narrowly triangular, c. 0.5–1 mm long. Corolla white or cream, lobes sometimes with red midvein; tube 3–5 mm long; lobes 2–3 mm long. Capsules 2–3 mm in diam., finely pubescent. Seeds c. 0.2 mm in diam.

Notes
Biyeys (Som.).The Somali material is subsp. arabica. Subsp. aethiopica in Ethiopia was said to have larger leaves and more divaricate branching of the inflorescences, but the variation in Somalia is great and it is doubtful if two taxa should be recognized.
