rootstock a globose tunicated corm; basal leaves 3–4, lanceolate, nearly glabrous, 3-nerved, 1/2–1 ft. long, 3/4–1 in. broad, narrowed to the dilated clasping base; peduncle a foot or more long, green, with several reduced leaves; inflorescence a lax deltoid panicle 1/2–1 ft. long, with finely hairy branches; upper bracts ovate; perianth 1/2–1 in. long, bright yellow, turning reddish-black when dried; 3 upper segments spotted inside at the base; 2 upper inner not contiguous; outer upper hairy and ribbed, all over; stamens included; capsule hairy, acutely 3-lobed at the sides and emarginate at the top; seeds covered all over with brown bristly hairs. null
