Shrub-like tree or shrub, 1–10(–25) m high; trunk terete, 2–30(–40) cm in diameter; bark pale grey-brown, smooth or shallowly fissured; branches lenticellate, branchlets glabrous, puberulous, or pubescent. Leaves petiolate; blade elliptic or narrowly elliptic, 7–42 cm long, 3–20 cm wide, bluntly acuminate, rarely acute or obtuse at the apex, cuneate or decurrent into the petiole at the base, glabrous, sometimes pubescent beneath and on midrib above; petiole 0–2 cm long, glabrous to pubescent, ochrea not widened into intrapetiolar stipules. Inflorescence 6–25 cm long, many-flowered, glabrous to sparsely pubescent in all parts; peduncle 5–18 cm long; bracts deciduous, ovate, obtuse; pedicels 3–20 mm long. Flowers malodorous; sepals 7–19 mm long, deciduous before the fruit develops, glabrous or puberulous; corolla creamy, greenish creamy, yellow or less often white; tube 7–15 mm long, almost cylindrical, twisted from 2–3 mm above the base; lobes twisted in bud, (narrowly) obovate or elliptic, 12–37 mm long, 7–16 mm wide, rounded or obtuse at the apex, entire, spreading, often recurved later; stamens exserted for up to 1.2 mm, rarely just included; anthers glabrous, usually twisted with corolla; pistil 7–12.5 mm long; ovules about 200 in each carpel; disk entire, ring-shaped, 0.8–1.2 mm high; style split at the base, 4–8 mm long. Fruit mericarps separate, only one developed, dark and blotched with very pale green, obliquely subglobose, often wider than long, laterally compressed 3–8 cm long, 3–8 cm wide; pericarp 5–15 mm thick, cream and orange.
