VIGNA monantha Thulin [family LEGUMINOSAE-PAPILIONOIDEAE], (1991);. type: C1, 27 km on road from Hobyo to Wisil, Thulin & Abdi Dahir 6616 (UPS holo., K MOG iso.). Fig. 232.
VIGNA triloba Chiov. var. somalensis [family LEGUMINOSAE-PAPILIONOIDEAE], Fl. Somala 1: 151 (1929);. type: C1, near “Obbia”, Puccioni & Stefanini 593 & 1038 (both FT syn.).
Information
Coodin (Som). Perennial herb with radiating trailing stems to 0.5 m long from a tuber; young stems hirsute with somewhat retrorse hairs. Leaflets 3, rhombic to narrowly triangular, 1.2–3.5 x 0.8–1.6 cm, the terminal ± deeply 3-lobed, the laterals ± oblique with outer lobe better developed, or occasionally the leaflets obovate and entire, shortly pubescent on both sides. Stipules lanceolate, subpeltate with a short, often somewhat fringed appendage at the base. Inflorescences 1(–2)-flowered; peduncle 2–8 cm long. Calyx shortly pubescent to glabrous or almost so; tube c. 4 mm long; lobes 2.4–3.2 mm long. Corolla blue or mauve; standard c. 1.7 cm long, glabrous; keel with a short beak. Pods suberect, c. 55 x 3 mm, densely pubescent with minute stiff hairs.
Range

Altitude range
50–150 m.
Distribution
SOMALIA Hemming 3348; Gillett, Hemming & Watson 22227; Thulin & Abdi Dahir 6691.
Notes
The subterranean tubers of V. monantha are edible. Thulin & Abdi Dahir 6546 from 300 m altitude in C1 (4°29’N, 47°23’E) is close to V. monantha, but differs in its 1–3-flowered inflorescences and in the up to 8 cm long, only shallowly lobed leaflets with a distinct silvery line above. This is probably a distinct taxon, but more material is needed for conclusiveness.
