Information
A shrub ranging up to 6–7 ft. high. Branches terete, striate, minutely hoary at length nearly glabrous. Leaves oblong-lanceolate, subacute, narrowed below into the petiole, serrate or serrate-dentate, puberulous-scabrid above, tomentose beneath, 2 1/2–3 1/2 in. long on flowering shoot, 3/4–1 in. broad; petiole 1/4– 1/2 in. Capitula 1 1/4 in. diameter, on puberulous peduncles of 1/4–1 1/2 in. in terminal corymbose cymes 1/2 ft. diameter; scales puberulous or inner glabrous below, ascending; intermediate linear-oblong with an oblong-or linear-lanceolate subacute appendix separated by but a slight constriction, innermost scales linear acute; receptacle naked. Corolla not seen (violet-coloured, fide Vatke). Achenes 20-striate, 10 red alternating with 10 nearly black striæ, shortly hirsute with ascending tawny hairs; setæ scabrous, outer very short.
