Information
Shrub, woody herb or rarely a tree 1.2–4 m tall; stems unbranched at base, branching from higher up, densely velvety-tomentose with russet-brown hairs. Leaves sessile, lanceolate or elliptic, 5.5–20 cm long, 1–7 cm wide, cuneate to attenuate into a sometimes winged auriculate or exauriculate petioloid base, margins obscurely remotely to coarsely serrate, apex acuminate, finely shortly pubescent and glabrescent above, grey-green tomentose or crispate-pubescent beneath. Capitula numerous in terminal compound corymbiform cymes; involucre ovoid, 15–24 mm long; appendages of phyllaries ± erect with spreading tips, white or rarely pale lilac; phyllaries 4–6-seriate, elliptic or lanceolate, with lanceolate or ovate appendages, longest phyllaries 11–22 mm long; appendages 7–16.5 mm long, 0.7–7.5 mm wide. Corolla mauve, violet or pale purple, turning white, 10–14 mm long, lobes 1.2–2.5 mm long. Achenes 3–4 mm long, black, glabrous or almost so, rarely ascending-pubescent; pappus 7–11 mm long.
