Information
Erect few-stemmed plants, 13–40 cm. tall with unbranched or occasionally branched stems usually becoming woody at the base, often with corky bark. Plants entirely glabrous or less often with sparse hairs on the stems and rarely on the leaves. Leaves linear, often a few much longer (up to 5·5 cm.) dispersed along the stem. Base of filaments gradually widened or with an inconspicuous appendage (not exceeding 0·5 x 0·4 mm.).

In sandy soil, often near the coast, on river banks or in grassland

Notes
Grosvenor 615 (PRE; SRGH) from Rhodesia (S) is a gathering of 10 sheets, most of which are intermediate between var. vulgaris and var. longifolia; one, however, is true var. vulgaris. Some intermediate specimens also occur in E. Transvaal.
