Information
Tall tree, 12 or probably more m. high; bark smooth, grey-green, aromatic; branchlets densely adpressed silky with ferruginous hairs, soon glabrescent, grey or purplish, strongly wrinkled, lenticellate. Leaf-blades oblanceolate or oblong-oblanceolate, 30–50 cm. long, 8–16 cm. wide, rounded, retuse or shortly and obtusely acuminate at the apex, rounded or cordate at the base, at first thin, later rather thick, hanging, glabrous above, densely adpressed silky beneath with ferruginous hairs when young, but at length quite densely but almost imperceptibly puberulous; midrib impressed above, very prominent beneath; lateral nerves ± 30, prominent beneath; venation reticulate on both surfaces; petiole 0.8–1.2 cm. long, thick. Flowers (not seen) borne on old branches and trunk. Petals greenish-yellow, dark red in the lower half. Fruiting peduncle probably obsolete or up to 1.5 cm. long; monocarps ± 15, oblong-cylindric, 3.5–7 cm. long, 2–2.7 cm. wide, obtuse or bluntly pointed at the apex, 8–23(–?)-seeded, very slightly grooved between the seeds, at first densely covered with adpressed silky pubescence, later only patchily so; stipes ±6–10 mm. long. Seeds compressed-ellipsoid, the outer margin almost smoothly semicircular, the inner almost straight, obtuse on outer edge, with 1–2 sharp angles on inner edge, 2 cm. long, 1.4 cm. wide, 6 mm. thick.

Notes
Engler & Diels included the East African material under Uvaria gigantea, but R. E. Fries separated the East African and West African material as separate species. Neither Mme. Le Thomas nor I can see any real reasons for so doing but until really adequate flowers and fruits in spirit are available from both areas there will be no evidence either way.
