Information
Robust perennial; culms 1.2–4 m. high. Leaf-blades broad, herbaceous, 30–100 cm. long, 10–25 mm. wide; ligule 2–3 mm. long, truncate. Inflorescence of 20–50 pedunculate racemes, each 10–25 cm. long, these borne in whorls upon a central axis 15–30 cm. long; internodes and pedicels glabrous. Sessile spikelet lanceolate; lower glume 5–6 mm. long, smooth and glabrous except for the spinulose keels, bluntly acute. Pedicelled spikelet 4–5 mm. long, its awn (0–)0.7–1.5 cm. long.

Notes
Awnless variants of this species can be mistaken for the genus Phacelurus, but the latter has transverse raceme-joints.
