Information
Tufted perennial; culms 1–2 m. high. Leaf-blades fairly broad, herbaceous, 10–40 cm. long, 4–10 mm. wide; ligule usually short, 1–3(–5) mm. long, truncate; sheaths commonly pubescent above. Inflorescence of (1–)3–4(–10) racemes, each 15–30 cm. long, subdigitate or borne upon a central axis 2–7(–12) cm. long; internodes and pedicels glabrous. Sessile spikelet narrowly oblong; lower glume 6–10 mm. long, glabrous except for the spinulose to ciliolate keels, not muricate, acute to bidenticulate (very rarely biaristulate). Pedicelled spikelet 2–7 mm. long, its awn 2–3.5(–5) cm. long. Fig. 194.

Notes
U. digitatum differs considerably from U. agropyroides in its more leafy habit and subdigitate racemes, supported by a number of useful, though inconstant, minor characters. However there is some degree of overlap between the two, and intermediate specimens are often hard to place.
