Shrub or small tree l–7.5(–12) m. tall, sometimes scandent; bark smooth, grey; young branches yellowish-brown, at first densely pubescent, later becoming glabrous. Leaf-blades obovate or oblong-obovate to almost round, (1.8–)6–14(–20) cm. long, 1.6–9.5(–11) cm. wide, broadly obtuse, rounded or somewhat emarginate at the apex, rounded to cordate or less often broadly cuneate at the base, thin, green above, paler and glaucous beneath, velvety when very young, later sparsely to densely pubescent on both sides with simple and sometimes also forked or stellate hairs or glab-rescent above, papery; venation laxly reticulate, prominent on both sides; basal glands often present; petioles 3–9 mm. long. Flowers hermaphrodite, solitary, terminal or more usually extra-axillary; pedicels (1–)2.5–5(–6) cm. long; bracteole conspicuous and leafy, usually situated near the base, round or broadly ovate, (0.5–)1–2.9 cm. long, 0.5–2.8 cm. wide, obtuse or rounded at the apex, cordate and clasping at the base, puberulous. Sepals broadly triangular to orbicular or rarely oblong, 4–6(–8) mm. long and wide, pubescent or tomentose. Petals yellow or greenish-yellow, thick, the outer broadly ovate, round or reniform, (0.4–)0.6–l.3 cm. long, 0.8–1.6 cm. wide, puberulous to tomentellous but glabrous at the base inside, often with impressed venation when dry, inner much shorter and thicker, very concave, obovate or rounded-ovate, 5–9 mm. long, 4–7.5 mm. wide, obtuse or rounded, clawed or narrowed below, at first connivent at the apex and remaining curved over the stamens, tomentellous all over save inside at the base. Stamens numerous, oblong or cuneiform, 0.75–1 mm. long, glabrous; filaments not developed; connective-prolongation broadly and obliquely capitate-truncate. Carpels 20–30; ovary ellipsoid or cylindric, 2 mm. long, 4-ovuled, pubescent; style much shorter than the ovary, elliptic or obconic, oblique, grooved. Fruiting pedicels 3–6 cm. long; monocarps 3–9(–14), red, of 1 –3(–4) segments, each ellipsoid to cylindric, 1.3–2 cm. long, 0.6–1 cm. wide, often apiculate, finely rugose, densely pubescent to glabrescent, edible; stipes 0.7–1.5 cm. long.
