Information
Shrub or small tree, 1.5–6(–10) m. tall; bark grey, smooth; young branchlets brown, rugulose, lenticellate, at first sparsely adpressed pubescent, soon glabrescent. Leaf-blades elliptic, oblong-elliptic or narrowly elliptic, 7–17.5 cm. long, 2.2–7.5 cm. wide, mostly acuminate at the apex, rounded or broadly cuneate at the base, coriaceous, glabrous and somewhat shining above, sparsely finely adpressed pubescent beneath; midrib impressed above, very prominent beneath; lateral nerves 10–14, prominent; venation reticulate; petiole 3–8 mm. long, thick. Flowers solitary or several together in fascicles, axillary or on the old wood; buds densely ferruginous silky; bract 1, reniform, 3 mm. long, 4 mm. wide, adpressed silky outside; mature peduncles 1–2 cm. long, ± 4 mm. thick towards the apex. Sepals reniform, 4–5 mm. long, 7–8 mm. wide, somewhat acute, adpressed silky outside. Petals mostly cream tinged maroon inside or inner ones maroon with cream margins; outer elliptic or ovate-elliptic, 1.5–2.2 cm. long, 1–1.5 cm. wide, subacute at the apex, ferruginous silky outside, densely puberulous inside;inner obovate-cuneate, strongly concavo-convex, 1.5 cm. long, 1–1.2 cm. wide, subacute at the apex, narrowed to the base, ± glabrous inside save at margins, pubescent outside. Stamens 1.9 mm. long. Carpels 7–20, sub-cylindric, 7–angled, 2 mm. long, 1.2 mm. wide, adpressed pilose with ±11 biseriate ovules. Monocarps 7–20, ellipsoid or oblong, 1.6–4.5 cm. long, 1.3–2 cm. wide, obtuse, at first green and puberulous, later dull orange and glabrous, 2–9(–12)-seeded, not constricted between the seeds; stipes very short. Seeds yellow-brown, rounded-cuneiform, 1.2 cm. long, 8.5 mm. wide, 6 mm. thick. Fig. 7.
