Names
Tylecodon wallichii [family CRASSULACEAE]
Information
Perennial with much branched erect stems up to 0,8 m high and covered with more or less elongated phyllopodia which are rarely completely replaced by a peeling bark. Leaves linear, (40-)60-120 x l,5-3(-4,5) mm, scarcely cuneate, acute, terete or slightly grooved above, glabrous or rarely pubescent, grey-green to grey-brown. Inflorescence a thyrse with 3—5(—7) straight ?monochasia, each with (3-)5-12 flowers, glandular-pubescent to glabrous; peduncle up to 0,6 m long; pedicels 3-5 mm long. Calyx 3-5 mm long, glandular-tomentose, yellowish green; lobes acute. Corolla glandular pubescent to glabrous; tube cylindrical to somewhat urceolate when dry and slightly widened towards mouth, 7-12 mm long, glabrous inside except for tufts of hairs where filaments are fused to tube; lobes 5-7 mm long, recurved or recoiled. Anthers 2,5-3(-4) mm long. Squamae usually square, 0,8-1,2 X 0,8-1,1 mm, usually distinctly emarginate, fleshy, yellow.
Habitat
In T. wallichii and T. cacalioides (below) the length of the phyllopodia varies greatly within the same population and on the same plant. The two species cannot be distinguished in the vegetative stage. (See also T. papillaris under Species insufficiently known). However, flowers of T. wallichii are much shorter and have glandular hairs inside the corolla tube.
Use
4. Tylecodon wallichii (Harv.) Tolken in Bothalia 12: 382 (1978). Type: Cape, Snowy Mountains, Wallich s.n. (K, lecto.!).
