TURRAEA nilotica Fiori var. glabrata [family MELIACEAE], in Result. Sci. Miss. Stefanini-Paoli: 49 (1916);. types: S3, between “Sahauen” and “Biobahal”, near “Giuba” R., Paoli 849 (FT syn.), and “Ferdadale”, Paoli 981 (FT syn.).
Information
Deciduous shrub or small tree to 10 m tall; bark rough, brown, flaking in large pieces. Leaf-blade elliptic to oblanceolate or obovate, rarely lanceolate, up to 15 x 8 cm, lower surface densely and softly pubescent to glabrous, rounded or obtuse, rarely emarginate or apiculate at the apex, cuneate at the base; petiole up to 1.8 cm long. Inflorescences 5–18-flowered sessile or subsessile clusters, usually from the spur-shoots. Flowers fragrant, greenish white, ageing yellow, often appearing before the leaves. Petals oblanceolate-oblong, 1.25–2.2 x 0.3–0.45 cm. Staminal tube shortly cylindrical, 0.8–1.5 cm long, flared at apex, inner surface occluded by long hairs in a dense band 0.2 mm thick, otherwise glabrous. Staminal appendages as long as anthers, almost completely united into a shallowly lobed frill; tips of connectives c. 0.1 mm long. Style exserted 0.8–1 cm, style-head ovoid-cylindric. Capsule depressed-globose, c. 0.7 x 1.5 cm, thinly woody. Seeds black with orange to red aril.
Range
S1, 3 Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania south to South Africa.
Altitude range
c. 150–400 m.
