Information
Shrub up to 4 m. tall, sometimes scrambling; first-year branchlets densely puberulous with spreading hairs, second-year more sparsely so, purplish-brown or reddish. Leaves mostly in fascicles. Leaf-lamina very variable in shape and size, up to 7 × 3·5 cm., but usually much smaller, rhombic to rhombic-spathulate, but outline often irregular, lower-surface glabrous except for a few scattered hairs on the nerves and conspicuous tufts of short hairs in the nerve-axils, apex subacuminate to emarginate, base narrowly cuneate, decurrent almost to the base of the petiole; petiole very short or absent. Inflorescence with peduncle less than 1 mm. long or flowers (1) 4–6-fasciculate; bracts very small, 1 mm. long, subulate; pedicels 4–10 mm. long. Flowers pure white. Calyx 2·5–5 mm. long, teeth pubescent. Petals 4–5 × 0·5 cm., linear-spathulate, glabrous outside. Staminal tube (2·5) 3·8–5 cm. long, cylindric, glabrous inside; appendages in pairs alternating with the anthers, 3–3·5 mm. long, glabrous outside, filaments not fused at the base. Ovary 5 (6)-ocular, densely setose-hairy; style 4–5·5 cm. long; style-head conical-cylindric from a broad base, exserted up to 5 mm. beyond the base of the staminal appendages. Capsule 5 × 10 mm., depressed-globose, very shallowly sulcate, leathery, glabrous; aril covering c. 1/6 of seed.
