Information
Annual or biennial, aromatic, glabrous, erect or decumbent herb up to 50 cm. high. Stem simple or branched from the base, the branches ascending. Leaf-lamina deeply pedately 3–7(9)-lobed, the lobes (0·5)1–8 cm. long, elliptic to linear, obtuse to acuminate at the apex, margin dentate-mucronate, the teeth up to 1·5 mm., light green; leaf-base subcordate, decurrent into a 2·5–15 mm. long petiole. Persistent cotyledons 2·2–2·7 × 1–1·5 cm., broadly elliptic, with petiole 5–9 mm. long. Stipules 2–6 mm. long. False stipules 5–20 mm. long, foliaceous, asymmetrical, acute-acuminate and mucronate at the apex. Tendrils absent. Cymes 1–2-flowered, with peduncle up to 2 cm. long; bracteoles 2–4 mm. long. Flowers glabrous, with stipe 1·5–3·5 mm. long. Hypanthium 1–2 mm. broad. Sepals 2·5–4·5 mm. long, with 2(3) keeled or winged green nerves. Petals 2–4·5 mm. long. Outer corona with the tube (0·5)0·75–1·25 mm. high and the threads (0·5)0·75–1 mm. long. Inner corona 0·33–0·75 mm. high, cup-shaped. Stamens 5, with the filaments 1–1·5 mm. long and the anthers 0·5–1 mm. Ovary 0·5–1·5 mm. long; styles free, 0·60–2·25 mm. long. Capsule 7–10(14) mm. long, ellipsoid to narrowly pyriform, shortly pedicellate, 1-seeded. Seed c. 7 × 4 mm., subreniform, alveolate, blackish.
Habitat
Woodland, scrub, savanna and grassland on sandy soils, fissures in granite rocks, roadsides, etc.
