Information
Annual or perennial, glabrous or pubescent erect or climbing herb 0·1–3 m. tall. Leaf-lamina 1–13 × 1–13 cm., 3–5-lobed, rarely simple, glabrous or hairy (sometimes only beneath), truncate or cordate at the base; lobes up to 8·5 × 3 cm., ovate, elliptic, lanceolate or obovate, obtuse or acute at the apex, margin entire or ± remotely dentate; petiole 0·25–8 cm. long, sometimes with a few glandular teeth at the apex. Persistent cotyledons up to 2 × 0·8 cm., elliptic, with slender petiole c. 6 mm. long. Stipules 3–15 mm. long. False stipules absent. Tendrils 1–15 cm. long, slender. Cymes 1–2-flowered, the flowers greenish-cream with stipe 2–10 mm. long; peduncle 1–10 cm. long; bracteoles 0·5–4 mm. long, sometimes caducous or absent. Hypanthium 1·5–4 mm. broad. Sepals 3–8 mm. long, obtuse or acute at the apex, glabrous or hairy. Petals 2–6 mm. long. Outer corona bluish, with the tube 1-·5–2·25 mm. high and threads 1·5–2·25 mm. long. Inner corona 0·75–1·5 mm. high, cup-shaped. Stamens 5(9), with filaments· 2–3 mm. long and sagittate anthers 1–1·5(2·5) mm. long. Ovary 0·65–2 mm. long; styles 3(4), free, 1–3 mm. long. Capsule 1·5-–7 × 0·7 cm., ellipsoid, 1–5-seeded. Seeds 6–7 × 4 mm., subreniform, blackish.
Habitat
Woodland, savanna and thickets on soils of various types.
