Leaves usually discolorous, oblong to ovate, the lowest slightly 3-lobed, 5.5–12.5 cm long, 2.5–9.5 cm wide, apex acute to subacuminate, central lobe ± 3 cm long, lateral lobes ± 0.5 cm long if present, base cordate to obtuse, margin 2-serrate, rarely crenate, densely covered beneath in a soft tomentose down of white stellate hairs, the hairs sparse above and with fewer and shorter arms; petiole terete, 0.9–4.5 cm long, 1–1.5 mm wide, indumentum as stem; stipules persistent, dark brown, narrowly triangular, 6–7 mm long, 0.5–1 mm wide. Inflorescence terminal, branches sparse, 10–22 cm long, lower nodes with slightly reduced, unlobed leaves, nodes 0.7–3.2 cmapart, each with 6–10 leaf-opposed cymes, cymes (1–)3-flowered; peduncle 3–4 mm long, indumentum as stem; bracts very narrowly ovate, 1.5–3.5 mm long, 0.25–0.5 mm wide; pedicels 1.5–2 mm long. Sepals narrowly lanceolate to oblong, slightly pandurate, 5–7(–10) mm long, 1 mm wide, densely grey stellate-hairy, apical spines 0.25 mm long. Notes
Various collectors in East Africa have pointed out that the lower stem is used locally to make a very good strong rope. This species was apparently cultivated for that purpose in Mauritius. T. tomentosa is distinguished from the T. pilosa, T. brachyceras and T. cordifolia, the other erect, shrubby species in East Africa which share hairy dehiscent fruits and tomentose leaves by the smaller (less than 15 mm diameter) fruits with bristles lacking a terminal hook.
