Shrub or tree up to 15 m. tall, with smooth bole; bark of branchlets dull brown, fissured, lenticellate, glabrous. Leaves (1) 2–6-foliolate; petiole and rhachis reddish-brown, 15–35 cm. long, sparsely appressed-puberulous (the hairs whitish, very short); petiole 2·5–10 cm. long, plano-convex; rhachis subcylindric, striate; leaflets concolorous, 6–17 × 3–8 cm., oblong, oblong-elliptic or elliptic, unequal (the basal ones shorter and sometimes ovate), abruptly or gradually acuminate, the acumen up to 1·5 × 0·5 cm., obtuse and sometimes slightly notched at the apex, with the margin somewhat thickened, revolute and sometimes undulate, subacute or rounded and symmetric at the base, subcoriaceous to coriaceous, glabrous except for the midrib minutely whitish-hirsute above and appressed-brownish-puberulous below; midrib impressed above, very prominent beneath; lateral nerves and the very lax reticulation nearly invisible or prominulous above, prominent beneath; petiolules c. 0·5 cm. long, canaliculate. Panicles up to 30 × 15 cm., terminal, with the cylindric axis much thickened in fruiting state, as also the densely lenticellate and sparsely appressed-brown-reddish-puberulous branches; pedicels 1–3 mm. long, very thick, densely puberulous. Male flowers ± similar to the female flowers: calyx-lobes c. 2 mm. × 2·5 mm., shortly ovate; petals c. 2·5–3 × 1·5–2 mm., oblong-ovate, obtuse, dark-veined; ovary densely dull-reddish-hispid; styles 3, compressed, reflexed; staminodes c. 2 mm. long. Drupe dull purple, 1–1·8 × 0·8–1·4 cm., ovoid-globose, ± puberulous.
