Information
A tufted perennial. Culms erect or geniculate, 3–10 ft. high, terete, slender to stout, simple, 3–6-noded, glabrous and smooth, or appressedly hairy towards the lower nodes, rarely all over. Leaf-sheaths striate, the lower longer than the internodes, loosely to densely pilose or hispid with tubercle-based hairs especially upwards, or glabrous, the upper shorter than the internodes, glabrous and smooth, or hairy like the lower; nodes glabrous, pubescent or densely bearded; ligule a densely ciliate rim; blade linear, narrowed towards the base, tapering to a fine point, up to 2 ft. or more long and 8 lin. wide, flat, firm, scaberulous, glabrous, or loosely pilose to hispid with tubercle-based hairs, scabrid on the margins. Panicle narrowly oblong, loose or contracted, up to 2 ft. or more long and 6 in. wide; rhachis terete, glabrous, smooth or rarely scaberulous, the lowest internode up to 5 1/2 in. long; branches filiform, scaberulous, simple at the base and loosely divided upwards, mostly verticillate or semi-verticillate, up to 8 1/2 in. long; pedicels unequal, the terminal up to 7 lin. long. Spikelets narrowly lanceolate and acuminate, at length narrowly oblong and gaping, 4–5 1/2 (rarely 3 1/2 or 6) lin. long, yellowish to dark brown, rarely pallid. Glumes firmly chartaceous, 3–5-nerved, glabrous or rarely with a few hairs towards the tips; lower narrowly ovate to oblong-ovate, truncate or very obtuse, 1 3/4–2 1/2 lin. long; upper linear-lanceolate, truncate, as long as the spikelet or slightly shorter. Lower floret ♂: valve similar to the upper glume, but as long as the spikelet, subacute or obtuse; valvule linear, truncate, 2–3 lin. long. Upper floret linear: callus truncate or slightly emarginate, 1/4– 1/3 lin. long; valve 2 1/4–3 1/4 lin. long, 2-lobed, with the acute lobes 1/3– 1/2 lin. long, thinly coriaceous, 7-nerved, pubescent; awn mostly 12–20 (rarely 8 or 22) lin. long; column 4–8 (rarely to 10) lin. long, at length dark brown, scaberulous; valvule 2 1/2–3 1/4 lin. long. Anthers 2, 1 1/4–1 1/2 lin. long. Grain linear, subterete, 1 1/2–2 lin. long.
