Perennial herb with several trailing or twining stems from large woody rootstock; stems to 1 m long in trailing plants and to 3(–5) m in twining plants, sparsely to densely orange setose (hairs to 5 mm long) when young (rarely whitish pubescent or pilose). Leaves with petiole 1.5–6.5 cm long, with a flat broad wing widening upwards but clearly distinct from lamina, indumentum as stems; lamina triangular-cordiform or broadly so, largest 2.5–11≈2–6.7(–8) cm, apex subacute to broadly rounded, base cordate with hastate lobes, margin entire to coarsely and irregularly dentate; pilose or sparsely so or setose on veins (rarely pubescent). Flowers axillary, solitary; pedicels 4–20(–26) cm long, indumentum as stems; bracteoles ovate-oblong, 2.2–4.2≈1.2–2.7 cm, acute to subacuminate, subcordate to deeply cordate and slightly 4-angular at base, orange setose or densely so (rarely whitish pubescent). Calyx puberulous and with capitate glands, rim 1–2 mm high, segments triangular or narrowly so, 0.5–2 mm long. Corolla bright orange, without purple throat; cylindric tube 3–7 mm long; throat sharply curved, campanulate, 1.5–3.5 cm long and 0.8–1.5 cm in diameter apically; lobes 1–2.5≈1.2–2.8 cm, broadly emarginate. Filaments 5–6 and 6–7 mm long; anthers 4–7 mm long, apiculate or not, densely bearded at base and 2/3 along one side; spurs ± 2 mm long. Capsule densely pubescent or pilose, subglobose, 8–14 mm in diameter, beak 10–20 mm long, constricted at base. Seed 5–7 mm in diameter, dark reddish brown, reticulate and with large pectinate scales along edge.
