perennial, densely tufted; innovation shoots intravaginal; culms erect or geniculate and ascending, 1–3 ft. long, rather slender, glabrous, simple or branched; sheaths compressed, keeled, firm, glabrous or the lower sometimes hairy and bearded at the nodes, exceeding the internodes, except the upper; ligules membranous, very short, obtuse or truncate, ciliolate; blades linear, long tapering to a fine point, 2–8 in. by 1–2 1/2 lin., very rarely broader, flat, rather rigid, glabrous or hairy below, panicle narrow, often nodding, 3–6 in. long, scantily branched, branches solitary or the upper 2–3-nate, filiform, glabrous, bearing capituliform, usually dense, fascicles of racemes; spathes lanceolate, obtusely acuminate, about 1 in. long, rarely longer, usually bearded at the base, glabrous or hairy, greenish or reddish; racemes 6–9 lin. long; involucral spikelets whorled sessile, persistent, lanceolate, acute or acuminate, 3 1/2–5 lin. long, rarely longer, glabrous or with scattered short tubercle-based hairs, ♂; their lower glume not or very obscurely winged on one side only; lower valve generally present; pedicelled spikelets linear-lanceolate, glabrous, on short glabrous or subglabrous pedicels; hermaphrodite spikelet 1, not exserted from the involucre, linear-oblong, subcylindric, 2 1/2–3 1/2 lin. long, callus pungent, up to 1 1/2 lin. long, glabrous in front, otherwise densely bearded with shining reddish or purplish hairs; lower glume obtuse or emarginate, smooth and shining except the rigidly pubescent or scabrid tip, obscurely 7–9-nerved, upper glabrous; lower valve glabrous, somewhat shorter than the glumes; awn of upper valve 2 1/2 in. long; anthers 1 lin. long; grain about 2 lin. long. null
Range
The species ranges throughout the tropics of the Old World. In the western parts of the Cape Colony, it covers vast tracts of land at low or high altitudes.

Notes
Durand & Schinz, l.c. 731, indicate also “ Themeda Forskalii, var. glauca, Hack.,” from Bechuanaland (Marloth, 995) and from the Cape Colony (Marloth, 807). I have not seen those specimens, but I suspect, they represent merely an unusually glaucous state of A. imberbis.
