Information
rootstock creeping, covered with dark brown scales; stems 1–3 ft. high, erect, slender, terete, olivaceous, with white disc-like markings; fertile stems unbranched or only slightly forked; sterile stems shorter, much branched, leafy; leaf-sheaths tightly convolute, 1–1 1/2 in. long, coriaceous, dull brown, striate, membranous and lacerate at the tips; smaller sheaths villous and prolonged into a small leaf; male spikelets numerous, in terminal, much-branched, panicled cymes; main branches remote, spreading; spikelets 1/2 in. long, sessile or pedunculate, at first cylindric, acute, subsequently oblong, many-flowered; spathe bract-like, half the length of the spikelet; bracts ultimately loosely spreading at the tips, oblong, abruptly acuminate, pale, ferruginous, hyaline at the margins; outer lateral perianth-segments conduplicate, apiculate, scarcely keeled, the others oblong flattish; female plant like the male; female spikelets 7–12, loosely arranged in a terminal, linear, little-branched cyme each 1/4– 1/2 in. long, oblong subglobose; spathe lanceolate acute; bracts lanceolate, abruptly acute; perianth suborbicular, compressed, arcuate; outer lateral segments deeply keeled, glabrous; the remainder shorter, oblong, flattish; fruit subglobose. null

Notes
Very variable and sometimes difficult to distingush from T. elongatus, with which it is frequently associated by collectors and in herbaria. The bracts of the latter plant are more straight-sided, deltoid, and not curved at the margins.
