Names
THALASSIA hemprichii (Ehrenb. ex Solms) Aschers. [family HYDROCHARITACEAE], (1871). Fig. 4.
Information
Rhizomes terete, greenish to light-brown, 2–6 mm in diam. Leaf sheath persistent, whitish or translucent, up to 9 cm long; blade 4–25(–40) cm long, 2.5–7(–10) mm wide; margin entire, sometimes slightly serrulate near the rounded apex. Peduncle of the male inflorescence c. 3 cm long, that of the female inflorescence 1–1.5 cm long, elongating up to 4 cm after anthesis. Spathal leaves 1.7–2.5 x 0.5–1 cm, entire or rarely serrulate near the apex. Male flower on a pedicel 2–3 cm long; female flower subsessile. Tepals colourless or light-brown, dotted or striated with reddish brown, 7–10 x c. 3 mm, revolute at anthesis. Stamens (3–)6–9(–12); anthers 7–11 mm long. Ovary of 6 carpels, up to 1 cm long; hypanthium 2–3 cm long; stigmatic branches 10–15 mm long, becoming recurved. Fruit c. 2–2.5 cm in diam., few-seeded.
Range
S2, 3, no doubt occurring also further to the north in the Red Sea and through the whole tropical region of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific.
Altitude range
upper sublittoral or just above low tide level.
