Information
Small tree 7–13 m. high; bark light grey to black, deeply fissured; branchlets light or dark reddish brown. Leaves spirally arranged; lamina broadly oblanceolate-elliptic to elliptic or broadly oblong-lanceolate, 15–24(–27.5) cm. long, 5–11 cm. wide, apex obtuse to acute or shortly acuminate, base acute to rounded, densely tomentose when young, becoming densely sericeous-tomentose on the main nerves and sparsely pubescent on the tertiary nerves beneath; lateral nerves 9–16 pairs; petiole 2.5–4 cm. long. Inflorescences of axillary spikes 7–16 cm. long; peduncle 1.5–5 cm. long, densely pubescent. Flowers white or cream with a strong smell of carrion, densely sericeous-tomentose. Fruit (fig. 12/18, p. 79) brown, narrowly oblong to oblong-elliptic, 5.5–8 cm. long, 2.5–3.5 cm. wide, apex obtuse to truncate, usually emarginate, apical peg sometimes present, base obtuse to rounded, finely tomentose; stipe 5–10 mm. long.

DISTR. U1–4; T1 in W. Africa from Guinée to Cameroun and east to Zaire, Sudan and Ethiopia

1000–1800 m.
