Names
Talinum crispatulatum Dinter [family PORTULACACEAE], in Fedde, Repert. 23: 369 (1927). — Poellnitz in Fedde, Repert. 35: 18 (1934). TAB. 71 fig. A. Type from SW. Africa.
Information
Very similar to T. caffrum but leaves more typically linear to narrowly linear-lanceolate and only very rarely lanceolate to oblanceolate and the margins revolute and often finely crisped. Petals yellow; seeds shining black and smooth but without concentric ridges. The smooth testa is actually made up of narrowly oblong cells arranged in concentric rings and radiating from the hilum, the outer wall of these cells is very slightly raised in the middle and they are sometimes furnished with very minute pits at the ends of the cells. These details can be seen clearly at a magnification of 25 × or more.
Habitat
With similar ecology and habit to T. caffrum but apparently confined to the hotter and drier parts of our area
Altitude range
below 1000 m.

Notes
The isotype of T. transvaalense Poellnitz in the SRGH does not have ripe seeds but this species is almost certainly not distinct from T. crispatulatum. The very minute pits usual in the seed of this species are lacking in some specimens, particularly towards the north of its area, but their presence or absence does not seem to be correlated with any other differences, so this can hardly be of specific significance.
